How to Choose the Best Kegs in Vancouver (Without Getting Pinched)

Listen up, see? You run a joint in this town, a bar, a restaurant, a speakeasy, and you want the cold stuff flowing. But the Vancouver keg scene? It’s a jungle out there. You don’t want to get pinched by high prices or, worse, serve a pint that looks like a bubble bath.

I’m Rachel, and I’m here to give you the lowdown. We’re talking the straight goods on kegs Vancouver style. If you want your customers happy and your pockets full of scratch, you gotta know which barrels to whistle for and which ones to leave on the dock. Stick with me, and we’ll make sure you’re the Big Boss of beverages. Capisce?

The Heavy Hitters: Choosing Your Size

First thing’s first, you gotta know your muscle. You can’t just walk into a warehouse and point at a silver tube. You need to know the difference between the "Big Boss" and the "Small Fry."

In this racket, we usually deal with two main sizes: the 50L and the 20L.

The 50L keg (that’s a full keg, for those of you who skipped school) is your workhorse. It holds about 140 pints. This is for your heavy hitters, the beers everyone wants. If you’re moving through suds faster than a getaway car, this is your guy.

Then you got the 20L keg (the "Sankey" or sixtel). It holds about 40 to 50 pints. This is for the specialty stuff. The "fancy" brews. The stuff that costs a bit more scratch but makes the dames feel classy. Using a 20L means the beer stays fresh because you kick the keg faster. Nobody likes a beer that’s been sitting around longer than a stool pigeon.

The Goods: What’s Brewing in the Neighborhood?

You want to support the local outfits? Smart move. The local breweries in Vancouver are making some real "liquid gold." If you want your tap list to have some real "moxie," you gotta look at these locals:

  • Farm Country Brewing: They know their way around a grain silo.
  • Five Roads Brewing: For when you want a beer that hits like a freight train.
  • Train Wreck: A name that’s easy to remember after three pints.
  • Please Beverage Co.: They’re polite, but their drinks mean business.
  • Good Company: Exactly what you want to be in.

But listen, sometimes you want the classics. The stuff that’s been around since the Prohibition days. We’re talking Lucky Lager for sale, a staple for any Vancouver dive that knows its history. Or maybe you want that Black Label beer Canada loves so much. It’s dark, it’s mysterious, and it goes down smooth.

Don't Let it Get Shaken Up: Settling the Score

Now, here is where most wise guys blow it. They get the keg delivered, they’re in a hurry to get the party started, and they tap it immediately. Big mistake. Huge.

You want to know how long should a keg sit before tapping? Listen close. When that truck rolls up, that beer has been bouncing around like a snitch in a tumble dryer. If you tap it right away, all you’re gonna get is a glass full of foam. And foam don't pay the bills, see?

So, how long does a keg need to settle? At least 2 hours. If you got the time, give it 24 hours in the cold box. This lets the CO2 get back into the liquid where it belongs. You want a pour that’s as smooth as a velvet suit.

And when you’re asking when to tap a keg, the answer is: only after it’s reached the right temperature. If it’s too warm, it’s a foam-fest. If it’s too cold, you lose the flavor. Keep it around 3 to 4 degrees Celsius. That’s the sweet spot, see?

Technical Specs: Knowing Your IBUs

You gotta know what’s inside the barrel before you start bragging to the customers. Some people like it bitter, some like it sweet.

Take Pilsner Urquell. It’s got an IBU (International Bitterness Unit) of about 40. That’s got some "bite" to it. It’s for the guys who want to know they’re drinking a beer.

On the other side of the alley, you got Coors Banquet. The Coors Banquet IBU is much lower, around 15. It’s a "session" beer. You can drink those all night while you’re planning your next big job.

And don't forget the cider crowd! Lone Tree Cider is a local favorite that brings the crispness of the Okanagan right to your glass. Speaking of which, Okanagan Springs is another heavy hitter you need on your roster if you want to keep the locals happy.

Maintenance: Keep it Clean or Get Pinched

You wouldn’t wear a dirty suit to a heist, would you? Then why are you serving beer through dirty lines?

If your beer tastes like a wet basement, your lines are dirty. It’s a crime against humanity, see? You need to keep those taps sparkling. We got a whole kegorator cleaning guide that tells you exactly how to scrub the pipes so the "G-Men" (Health Inspectors) don't shut you down.

Bad maintenance leads to:

  1. Foamy beer: Wasting your profits down the drain.
  2. Flat beer: Nobody wants a drink that’s got less life than a concrete shoe.
  3. Off-flavors: If it tastes like vinegar, you’re doing it wrong.

Check out our bar maintenance section if you want to stay on the right side of the law.

Planning a Big Job? (Events & Weddings)

Maybe you aren't running a bar. Maybe you’re just throwing a big bash, a wedding, a "retirement" party for a pal who’s heading "upstream."

You need more than just the keg. You need the hardware. You need ice tubs, you need CO2 tanks, and you need someone who knows how to work the pump. We handle the keg-tapping 101 so you don't look like a mook in front of your mother-in-law.

We can even help you find bartender services. You want someone who can pour a drink without spilling a drop? We know people.

A Couple of Jokes for the Road

Since we’re all friends here, let me tell you a few "rib-ticklers" to share with the boys at the bar:

  1. Why did the keg go to school? Because it wanted to get a little "drafty"!
  2. What’s a gangster’s favorite beer? A "Stout" defender!
  3. Why don't beers ever get lonely? Because they always hang out in "six-packs"!

I know, I know. I should stick to the beer business.

“Always superb service from this outfit. I’m up in Osoyoos and call Brad for advice as my coupler wasn’t working. I had a domestic when I needed a European. He gave me the fix, and even texted me the solution, but I remember last year he told me I had the wrong coupler for Coors. I had the right coupler all along and now get to enjoy Peroni over the long weekend. Who am I kidding, for the summer.”
